The President of ECO-Culture Holding gives an interview to Expert magazine

The Russian Business section in the next issue of Expert magazine features an interview with the President of ECO-Culture, Alexander Rudakov. The head of Russia’s largest agro-industrial holding told the editor about the direction the Russian greenhouse industry is moving in, the ways of ECO-Culture to develop its business, and what principles the company uses to grow tasty and environmentally friendly vegetables.

According to Alexander Rudakov, last year the volume of greenhouse vegetable production has grown by 20 per cent compared to the year before. The trend of increased production capacity is also can be observed this year.

ECO-Culture is the leader of the Russian market, specializing in greenhouse tomatoes cultivation. Over the past few years, the company has spent more than 50 billion rubles on the construction of greenhouses in different regions of the country. The same amount is planned to be invested in future projects. By the end of this year, the total capacity of all the greenhouses of the holding will amount to 225 hectares, and this figure is expected to double by 2022.

The President of the holding also noted such factors as the withdrawal of government support and, in particular, the reduction of compensation for capital costs, as well as the growth of electricity tariffs, might make investments in Russian greenhouse business inefficient. And while just recently the payback period for such projects was 8 years, today it is extended to 10-12 years.

All this puts off the implementation of the import substitution program for an indefinite time. In order to fully satisfy people’s needs for greenhouse vegetables (and that is something ECO-Culture” sees as its mission), the capacity of the industry should grow more than twice.

As for the plans and prospects for the future of the holding itself, the company seems to deal with its tasks more than successfully. In the coming years, it is planned to expand the range of greenhouse products. In fact, there are a few new projects to be launched in different regions of Russia and abroad.
